SHELVING IS JUST THE BEGINNING!

If you are like everyone else, every shelf you have always gets used!
To maximize the storage space you now have, here are some tips you might find useful.

1. Get more shelving! Consider adding shelving to your current layout.  Maybe an extra shelf above current closet shelves would help.  An open wall in a closet might be able to accommodate a “stack of linen” shelves.  The laundry area or garage might need extra shelves.  Sometimes pantry closets and linen closets can take extra shelves at the top or the bottom – or both.



2. Get shelving accessories! Wire shelving is designed to take many different  accessories.  Become familiar with them. They include:

Some other tips for improved storage utilization.
    1. Identify the primary use for each storage area.  Store things at or near the point where they are used.
    2. Weed out every once in a while. Do you keep “passing over” particular clothes every time you are looking for something to wear? 
    3. Organize your space and keep it that way.  Separate areas according to function. Some people separate by seasons, some by dress/casual clothes.  Have special spots for sweaters, jeans, shorts, etc
    4. For miscellaneous items, list the location where it is stored and keep this “Master List” in your Household Folder.

Wash the worry right out of doing the Laundry
No one has ever called doing laundry fun, but you can make it easier and less time consuming!
Here's a few tips to help:

  • Arrange all your supplies in the order that you use them and easy to reach. Store extra's on a higher shelf or in a cabinet.
  • Use separate baskets or bins for small items like sewing supplies for a quick fix, sponges or rags for spills, stain removal products, and keep one for all those items that get left in the pockets of jeans and jackets, ( but empty it often)
  • Get the largest multi-compartment hamper your space will allow or separate ones if you like, and sort whites, brights, darks, and hand washables. Get a separate hamper or bag for dry clean only items that can be carried to the car easily.
  • If you have room use a folding table, a pair of basket systems with a desk-top works great.
  • Keep a folding or pull out drying rack handy for those dryer no no's
  • Mount an ironing board on the wall or door for easy and quick access. Or use the clever Iron n' Fold tension mount ironing board that mounts right between the washer and dryer.
  • Install a Freeslide shelf near the dryer to hang clothes on right out of the
    dryer and to store empty hangers on.
  • Keep several sizes of mesh wash bags for delicates near by.
  • Install a paper towel holder near the washer or sink ( if you have one)
  • Keep a laundry basket for each member of the house and sort as you fold and then you can simply deliver the baskets to each room or let them come and get them.
  • Finally if others help with the laundry keep a list of items that need special attention or instructions and place it near the washer to avoid any incidents.

5 Things to Help You Get Organized

  1. A HOME FOR EVERYTHING AND EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE.
    Every item you have, no matter what it is, should have a designated home. For instance, the home for your un opened mail might be your mail sorter, which is located by your back door. Or your home for your extra card stock and labels, might be the 2nd shelf of your office supplies cabinet. If an item doesn't have a specific home, it's considered to be 'homeless.' Something that is homeless, tends to get lost. Designate a specific home for all of your stuff. Then, be sure that everything taken, gets returned to its home when done being used.

  2. DON'T PUT IT DOWN. PUT IT AWAY.
    When you remove something from its home, the best thing to do when you're done using it, is to put it away. Yes, sometimes it seems easier to just place it on the kitchen table until later, or to put it on your desk until tomorrow. Unfortunately, this often results in many items being out of place, which can leave your home or office in disarray. Never mind the fact that it presents a bad example for other family members, or staff members. The 2 minute rule. Don't give clutter a chance to accumulate. Put it away now. You'll find it when you need it, and your environment will remain clutter-free. 2 minutes now, a headache later.

  3. FILE, DON'T PILE.
    It is very easy to get overwhelmed with paper. Our paper volume increases on a daily basis. Between lists, mail, bills, school papers, documentation, warranties, etc., it's often seen as a pain to take the time to handle those papers immediately. However, if those papers begin to transform themselves into piles--and they usually do--it's going to be even more of a pain to get them under control. Piles tend to get taller and taller, until even the idea of dismantling them seems colossal. This results in lots of piles, and even more stress. If you DON'T need a piece of paper, get rid of it immediately. Either recycle it, or give it to the appropriate party. If you DO need a piece of paper, file it right now. Don't put it down, even for a minute. Either place it in your filing cabinet, your Tickler file, your bill paying system, etc. If you take the time to file it now, it won't stand a chance of growing into a huge pile.

  4. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY.
    Clutter and chaos go hand in hand. The more things you have, the easier it is for clutter to form and grow. Always remember to place your emphasis on quality over quantity. In other words, it's not important to have a lot of things, many of which you never use. It's more beneficial to have fewer things, all of which you use and/or enjoy. Simplify your life and you will get and stay organized!

  5. FIND EVERYTHING YOU NEED WHEN YOU NEED IT, GET EVERYTHING DONE WHEN IT'S DUE.
    Many people think that getting organized is about being neat and tidy. On the contrary, a person who is not very neat or tidy, can be very organized. Being organized actually entails 'finding everything you need when you need it, and getting everything done when it's due.' If you can master these two things, you are well on your way to being organized.

How To Budget For Ventilated Wire Shelving

Every home, homeowner, and builder has different needs and wants. The following is based upon averages from many jobs.

  1. Figure the square feet of closet space.
  2. Multiply by $4.50 for a spec home, or $5.00 to $6.00 for a custom home.

Notes:
  1. Over a washer/dryer, figure the space as 2’(deep) x the length of the space to be shelved.
  2. If the home has a walk-in pantry, multiply the total square feet of closet space by $6.
  3. When we meet with the homeowner, the cost is closer to $5 or $6 per sq. ft. They usually add “stacks of linen,” want more double hang space (usually 2/3 DH and 1/3 SH), and choose Freeslide over Shelf and Rod for hanging space, and do more with Reach-Ins.
  4. If the customer has very specific goals in mind (a home office, maximum pantry, substantial garage shelving, etc.), $7 or so per sq. ft. is closer.
  5. For customers who desire Basket Systems, Melamine (wood laminate) Shelving, or our new Ventilated Wood , the formula presented here will not help much. These jobs just need to be priced out as there are so many variables that there really is no “average”.

Foyer 22 ¾" x 30" (2'x 2 ½") = 5sq. ft.  
1 Bedroom Right 22 ¾ " x 61" (2' x 5') = 10sq. ft.  
2 Bedroom Right 24”  x  91½” (2’ x 8’) = 16 sq. ft.

KIDS' ROOMS: CONQUER THE MESS!
DO'S DON'TS AND HINTS

  • DO-Pick a small area at a time to concentrate on first. You will get more done in a smaller amount of time, with a bigger sense of accomplishment.
    DON'T-Try to organize the whole room (Or for those of us perfectionists - the whole house) in one morning or afternoon.
    HINT-Get a mental picture or better yet have a simple sketch ready of what you would LIKE the room to look like.

  • DO-Gather all necessary tools before you begin. Container World recommends 3 to 4 large bins, laundry baskets, or boxes to separate and remove what doesn't belong.
    Examples:

  1. Stay - belongs in the area your organizing.
  2. Elsewhere - belongs somewhere else in the house.
  3. Donate - Things to give away…i.e. church -goodwill.
  4. Yardsale or uncertain.
  5. Throwaway - Not good enough to keep or give away.

DON'T- keep maybes or might's. If Johnny has 23 pairs of sox and 3 electronic dog's that basically do the same thing eliminate the extras to someone who needs them and what's left will stay neater longer.
HINT-Use a medium size bin with a lid to hide 8-10 toys for several months and during a particularly boring time pull them out for that NEW TOY excitement & interest.

  • DO-have a plan. Do you need to change any permanent structure? Closet shelving, rods, buy new furniture. Measure areas that will need an exact fit. Take in to account the size and shape of items to be put there. Put together a combination of bins, tubs, hooks, toy chains, underbed boxes, shelves, stacking drawers and over the door organizers to make use every possible space. {See attached idea list.}
    DON'T-go on a shopping spree without a good plan and plenty of measurements. This will save you many wasted trips back to the stores.
    HINT-keep in mind your child's height and what you want he/she to reach without assistance


  • DO-Label, Label, Label. Use your computer, tape, Or picture labels are great for young children!! You can even label a hanging sweater organizer for each day of the week and place that day's outfit and/or project in it for quick mornings.
    DON"T-put labels where they will be hidden or covered by something else stored near or on top of it.
    HINT-Get your child involved in the labeling process. A feeling of accomplishment helps them stay focussed too.

  4. Group toys in categories such as outside toys, dress-up, play house parts, cars & trucks, kid meal toys, play dishes, Lego's, etc…
  5. Use walls efficiently with a toy net, bulletin boards for artwork, lots of hooks to hang coats, hats, toy bags, etc.

Quick Tips for Busy Moms

  • For sorting and storing things like: Toys, Diapers, extra t-shirts, bibs, or anything needed in more than one room, use stacking bins/baskets or a basket system behind a sofa or door.

  • Over the door pockets (especially clear ones) are excellent organizers for lots of clutter dilemma's such as: A monthly organizer for events and things to do, sorting bills and expenses, small toys, shoes, kitchen accessories on the inside of a pantry door, or anything else that needs sorting for easier days.

  • Clear stacking drawers are perfect for organizing anything from small toys to adding large drawer space along the floor of a walk-in closet. These are especially good for bathroom items like make-up, q-tips, combs and brushes, and ponytail holders and hair clips when you don't have enough of those small bathroom drawers.

  • A really good use for an ordinary recipe box is to store and sort (by date or who bought for) your receipts from purchases made. This keeps them handy for returns, taxes, and price comparing.

  • An all in one 5-6 drawer small plastic chest in the rooms where you spend the most time can be a quick place to place toys and other clutter out of sight and still accessible.

  • We recommend a 2-wheel cart if you have a large home or room to quickly pick up clutter and whiz through the chore of picking up. And if company is coming you can always park it in an out-of-the-way spot until you have a little more time to put things back where they belong.

  • Use a 3-hole punch and a 3 ring binder with sheet protectors to hold little one's artwork or mail and info sheets that you receive that you would like to keep. This keeps a desk from getting piled up with loose papers and important things from getting lost in the shuffle.

  • No time to write down the countless things you think of that you need to do or buy? Use a hand held tape recorder instead.

  • You can triple the space in a Childs closet (and double yours) with an add-a-bar extension.

  • If your recipe box isn't working for recipes and you don't have time to write them on a neat little card, use a magnetic photo album and just print, cut, and stick them in place. This looks neater on the counter sometimes too.

  • An expanding peg rack can be priceless for anything hangable.
